Joel Wins the Plywood Cup Corporate Challenge – Racing, Fun, Sun and all for charity
This past weekend was the Annual Plywood Cup Corporate Challenge. What is that? In case you did not catch it on the news it is an annual event that held to raise money for the charities such as Big Brothers, Big Sisters, The Special Olympics, and Small Talk.
17 teams of four from various corporations (as well a 2 teams from the tall ships) were given 2 sheets of plywood, a handful of nails, duct tape and then 90 minutes to build a boat sea worthy to race around False Creek. Once finished teams raced around a course in False Creek.
This was my first year and it was a great success for Re/Max. We were the first team to finish our boat, finishing with 20 minutes to spare (and clean the mess!). After a parade around Science World and False Creek we took to the water. Being the smallest member of the team I was given the job of ‘jockeying’ the small craft around the well polluted track. Mike Schelhaas of Re/Max Realty was the designer, although I doubted him, his design was ‘second to none’ (I managed to not even get wet).
It was a tough race with some great competition (although there were a few teams that didn’t even make it away from the dock!). Despite this our SS Re/Max came out in 1st Place. Although a great feat, the real win of the day came not with the boat racing but with raising money. Our team managed to get first in this as well raising the most funds. It was a real joy to be able to give back to the children of Vancouver in need.
Dodi Thorhaug, John Houlihan, and Mike Schelhaas and myself Joel Carcone were the team members who donated time, money and effort into making this charitable event a success. We will be going back next year to defend our 1st place spot! We welcome anyone who wants to donate money or would like to watch some of the individuals from Vancouver’s largest corporations make fools out of themselves in bathtub like boats. We have raised the bar and hope to increase donations to this worthy cause.
